WQ Diner

WQ Diner

10:08 - 11:30 am

Pulling up to WQ Diner, we had some doubts that we were not at the right location. The outside of the building looks unfinished, with no actual signs on the building to mark it as the diner. There is a ridiculously tall sign that says “WQ Diner, the Finer Diner” with a very Irish theme that does not match the red building. The interior is huge with tons of seating. It keeps the red and brown color themes (nothing Irish) with a balance of not feeling outdated but not feeling too modern. There were lots of old-timey pictures throughout the dining room. At first, you just think “oh those are cool”, but they were all taken in Pottstown (which is where the diner is), and we thought that was a neat touch. Our waitress was very sweet and attentive without getting in the way. The menu was surprisingly extensive for breakfast. We were excited to try this diner with a brand new guest reviewer and the queen of coffee, Dill with It.

Dill With It

The coffee was good, typical restaurant coffee. My egg was broken a bit, but it tasted good with a dark yolk. The toast is wonderful, and I get it dark because I want it crunchy and it was crunchy. I had a side of grilled tomato slices that were very good, but I do like them a little crunchier. Not too soft but a little crisp on it. But, everything tasted good.

The decaf coffee was good. It was a very standard cup of coffee. Personal preference, but I did not care for the packets of sweeteners that they have at this place. They weren’t the typical Sweet n’ Low or Splenda and I could tell the difference.
I ordered the southwestern breakfast wrap with egg, cheese, sausage, jalapeno, and chipotle sauce. It was really good, I really enjoyed the wrap. The menu was not joking when it said the wrap would be “lined” with jalapenos…like there was so much pickled jalapeno in there it was absolutely insane. I do enjoy pickled jalapenos but I had to pull some out because it was unbelievably spicy. I know what I signed up for, so it is not a complaint. I do wish there was more of the chipotle sauce, otherwise the wrap was really good. The ratio of ingredients inside was good (except for the copious amounts of jalapeno) and it was not too big. I had home fries on the side, but I’m not sure if I would consider them home fries or hash browns (they were noodle shaped like at Waffle House). I was not impressed. They definitely had a fake butter flavor, but they needed a ton of salt and ketchup to make them taste semi-decent. I wish they cooked them a bit more. They were just too soft, so if they were crispier, I think it would have been a better side.

This was probably the first time since I've been a child that I've been asked whether I want a small or large orange juice. I thought that was kind of funny like oh yeah, I'm pretty big dude, I don't want a little kiddy orange juice, I want a large. I now understand why they ask. The orange juice was in one of those big red Coke cups and it was full to the brim. It was definitely the largest orange juice I've ever had out, so I kind of ate my words for questioning them a little bit. It was pretty good and honestly strong. It was tasty with a little bit of pulp. I honestly almost didn't finish it which is unheard of so that tells you something.
This menu probably had the most options of Benedict I've ever seen. Some of them caught my eye, like scrapple and fried chicken, but the one I got seemed like it was their specialty. It was called the WQ Beef Pot Roast Benedict so I gave that one a whirl. I've never seen anything like that. One difference from the other Benedict options was that the hollandaise was a cheese hollandaise. I don't know exactly what that means. I'm guessing they just stir some cheddar cheese into the sauce. It was pretty dang good. I was a little afraid because the beef in pot roast can be a little dry. I didn't notice that at all, but especially when you have a buttery hollandaise on top it makes it hard for it to be really dry. The egg was the darkest yolk I think I've ever had out, and I don't know how much it adds to taste but it definitely is beautiful. The hollandaise was a little bit more orange-y. I couldn't really pick out the cheese flavor too much, but it did all work together. The hash browns were extremely compacted, almost like they were trying to build a house out of them. In some parts of it you couldn't even get the individual strand. It felt a lot like a baked potato. I tried Bethany's and I think they were a lot better in that regard. I don't know what the chef had against my potatoes. I agree that they needed some salt and some ketchup. The amount of potatoes was exceptional. It's probably up there in the most amount of potatoes, so overall my meal was quite hefty. Our guest reviewer did mention afterwards that maybe she should have recommended the tater tots. Apparently they're a little bit different shape and very good. So maybe next time we'll try that out.
