Whitehall Diner

Whitehall Diner is located in none other than Whitehall Pennsylvania, right off of the famous MacArthur Road but past the Lehigh Valley Mall and all the other busy spots. You do have to pull in through an auto sales parking lot to get to the actual Whitehall diner parking lot and when you do, be careful because there is not a lot of parking available. Almost every single spot in the lot was filled which usually is a good sign because that means that either everybody is out for breakfast or everybody just really loves this diner. They have a nice little waiting area with some comfy benches to sit on. Despite how full the parking lot was, it only took a couple minutes to get seated. We believe the parking lot is the exact size of the capacity of the restaurant because we got seated in the very far back of one side of the diner and every single table that we walked by was full. Whitehall Diner seems to be known for their capacity efficiency. Those tables and booths were about as small and as close together as physically possible to fit the most amount of people that they could in there. The booth was barely big enough for a large person and a 9-month pregnant person to sit at without both of their bellies touching the table (although the pregnant lady’s belly did touch the table the whole time). Our waitress was very polite and the service was quick and pleasant.

I got my decaf and water. The water was chlorinated so that was kind of disappointing and the coffee was fine. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. I had no real complaints and drank most of the cup. I got a “special” breakfast burrito. They do have a regular one on the menu but the special one had chorizo and jalapenos in it so I went that route. I need to stop gaslighting myself into thinking that I really like jalapeno in my breakfast wraps because I want it every single time, but then it's always too much and too spicy for me. So that's a “me" problem, not a problem with the actual food. The wrap had chorizo, eggs, cheddar cheese, onion, tomatoes and pickled jalapenos in it and it came with sour cream and salsa on the side. I was really impressed with the burrito. Not only did all of the ingredients have a good balance, like there weren't too many eggs, there wasn't too much cheese, and the veggies were just right. There was too much jalapeno for me, but that's again my problem. They also toasted it on the flat top which in my opinion just takes it to the next level. The salsa definitely felt homemade by itself. There was a lot of cilantro in it when you ate it alone, but when you ate it as a bite with the rest of the wrap, it was excellent. The sour cream was great as well, nice and thick. The home fries were outstanding. Probably some of my favorite home fries to date. I don't know what it was about them, but they had the right amount of oil and butter on it. They had some crispy bits throughout, not just on top. And even the bits that weren't crispy still tasted really good. I didn't need to add any additional salt and in my opinion home fries always taste better with a little bit of ketchup, but it was an excellent breakfast for me.

The orange juice was very clearly made from concentrate. Not my favorite, not bad, just existing. I was struggling to decide between a special benedict with pork belly and normal benedict, and I decided to play it safe and just do the classic. There was a lot of Mexican inspired food on the menu so that made me also consider the carnitas benedict but I decided again just to get a nice baseline here. The eggs benedict itself was pretty good. I think when I first saw it, I was judging it that it wasn't going to be very good. The roll was really toasted, I could see how brown and thick the Canadian bacon was, and the hollandaise just looked fine. I think it was better than I originally judged, but it still wasn't great. The egg was not overcooked; it was pretty juicy. The hollandaise sauce itself was pretty good, maybe a little above average but pretty traditional. The real star was the potatoes. They were both very soft, wet, and buttery, but also crisp, and not just like a half-a**ed crisp where put on the flat top for 2 seconds right before they put on your plate and only like there's like one layer of crisp. I feel like it was like they'd really been cooking them down for a while and allowing it to brown. They were probably my favorite home fries I've had. I can't think of another one that's clearly above it. I can think of other ones that were also excellent but it's up there for sure. I think I would like to come back and try some of the other benedicts now that they've proved themselves with some of the Mexican flavors, Bethany's wrap, and just the overall quality of the actual meal.
Side note: the price was extremely fair. For our two full breakfasts with drinks, it was only $28 without tip, which is one of the cheapest breakfasts we have had to date. We typically do not include pricing, but after coming off of Sammy’s Bullfrog Cafe (which was $60 for arguably less food and less good food), we felt this was important to mention.
