New Country View Diner
10:09 - 10:48 am
We were truly out in the boonies visiting New Country View Diner this morning. North of Schnecksville, the drive goes through a pretty rural area along Route 309. These past few diners have had some parking lots that are not user friendly. For this one, you either need to risk your luck to park right along 309 (which is not a slow, back road) or if you mess up and there's no parking spots out front, you need to go back out onto the street to get to a secondary parking lot in the back. The dining room feels like an old house or hunting cabin with the amount of wood paneling on the interior. The menu gave many country-style breakfast options such as biscuits and gravy, chipped beef, and “hot cakes” instead of pancakes.

My decaf coffee was fine. It actually came in such a small mug that I didn't need my full amount of sugar or cream to make it taste good. The water was nice and refreshing even though the ice cube was the size of a hockey puck. With no breakfast wrap on the menu, I decided to lean into Ben's realm of ordering and I got myself the Farmers Benedict. This was two eggs (which I got over medium instead of poached) with Canadian bacon and a biscuit (instead of an English muffin) served with sausage gravy (instead of a Hollandaise sauce). The best part of the Benedict was the eggs. They were cooked perfectly with a nice and runny yolk, but none of the funny undercooked white bits. Overall, the other parts were very dense and heavy, like the chefs had a lot of extra flour that they needed to use up. The biscuit was quite thin and dense, but not dry. It almost felt like the biscuits weren't cooked enough. The Canadian bacon just was there. There was nothing noteworthy about it. The sausage gravy was really thick and floury. It was good, but it was just a very heavy-tasting meal. The potatoes on the side were in desperate need of flavor. They didn't have much butter or oil on them and they immediately needed a lot of salt and ketchup to be edible.

I also ordered a short stack of hot cakes on the side because I have really been wanting some pancakes. I was impressed by the hot cakes. I don't know if I was just really in the mood for them or they were actually really good but they hit all the right notes. The smell of them when they first came out was outstanding. The little butter cups that they put on the plate melted the butter to basically liquid gold (which was lovely) and the prepackaged syrup did its job of making the pancakes taste even better.

I was feeling a little spicy today so when I saw the special on the board for a corned beef hash Benedict, it sounded good to me. When I went to order the board was away from me so I wasn't sure if I remembered the special correctly and even the waitress had to go over and check the board which was kind of funny. The orange juice was extremely fine. Maybe a little bit below fine to the point where it wasn't really standard. I was pretty excited for the potatoes when they came out. They just looked like what I was really going for. They had the crisp on them and they looked like they were very well oiled and juicy but they weren't as much as I thought, like they almost seemed more unhealthy than they tasted good. I had to add salt which I generally don't and ketchup. The eggs benedict itself was not bad. The egg was pretty standard. I could barely taste the muffin. I feel like it got covered with all the wetness. And then the corned beef hash itself was a little odd. I don't know if maybe I just wasn't in the right headspace, but it was kind of giving me cat food vibes a little bit. I don't know. I don't usually get that way about corned beef hash but something about it was just giving me the ick.
The pancake did smell quite nice when it got to the table. When I took a bite, it was pretty good. It was maybe not the fluffiest but it was hitting the spot. It was a little floury tasting but again, they were pretty solid.

Too much flour, not enough flavor
