East Penn Diner

East Penn Diner

Setting the Scene

East Penn Diner sits along Route 29 in the middle of Emmaus, busy with travelers between Route 100, the PA turnpike and Route 78. From the outside, it is another shiny diner, but the blues and grays of the interior do bring the decor into this century. We were one young couple amongst the dinosaurs at 10:00 on a Friday morning. Our waitress was very nice and the food came out quickly, but it took a while to get the check which wasn't great.

We both got our regular orders. For Bethany, decaf, a water, and a breakfast wrap with home fries. For Ben, a large OJ, and eggs Benedict with home fries.

Bethany

The coffee there is the best diner coffee I've had so far in this area, so shout out for that. Water was chlorinated, which is a big ol’ bummer. I got the “East Penn breakfast wrap” which had egg, cheese, and sausage in it. The cheese was super molten and melty (yum) and the flour wrap was good, but it could have used some time on the flattop to bring it to the next level. I liked the sausage inside, but the egg was definitely overcooked (I could see the brown edges). Overall, the wrap was fine, not my favorite though. Last time I went here, I got a breakfast skillet dish which was freaking amazing, so keep that in mind. On to the potatoes…honestly, delicious. I added some salt and I wish they were crispy like Ben's, but they slapped for some reason. I'll just get them well done next time.

Ben

The OJ was strong. Bethany compared it to Sunny D, which emphasizes the strength, but I liked it. Overall I thought my meal was delicious. The eggs benedict had some of the most flavorful hollandaise I’ve had in awhile. The egg was just a tad runny which I like. The ham was a little on the thick side and thus was a little chewy.
My potatoes (compared to Bethany’s) were amazing. They had a good brown on them and were buttery and with some ketchup, they were just delicious. I wish I had more.
